The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. New directions in biological research especially from the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, as well as new techniques made available in sciences like biochemistry and genetics were at first only slowly integrated by evolutionary biology. Biology pre-health students and others from UNC traveled to Spain over the summer to gain clinical hours, cherished memories and insights from physicians on what it truly means to be a healthcare professional.
The work of our faculty and students covers all levels of biological organization and a variety of biological systems and model organisms. The curriculum for majors covers modern biology from molecules and cells through organisms, populations, and ecosystems, and emphasizes the conceptual, historical, and technical progression of biological science. 6. Basic Biology will introduce you to the fascinating study of the life on Earth. You can’t study cellular biology without knowing biochemistry and molecular biology as well. I have always loved being in the outdoors, and I wanted a major where I could learn in it, not just about it. Studying biology has been a great way for me to apply what I learn in class to meaningful field experiences. We offer a broad range of learning opportunities, including traditional classroom experiences, hands-on experiences in the field and the laboratory, independent study, and full student engagement in research.
Research All Biology faculty members share a passion for cultivating a love of research in students. In addition to subject-specific knowledge of biological systems and concepts, you develop a range of practical and technical skills and learn how to use specialist techniques and technical equipment. In years 2 and 3, you’ll build on your fundamental biology skills and knowledge. The friction between the two areas – and the protection of the lesser funded evolutionary biology – was resolved by a process of fission separating or cleaving the two halves of biology, one molecular and the other organismic (Smocovitis, 1996).
The biological study can be traced back to early times. The Crane Lab investigates why cells deteriorate with aging and other diseases with a focus on cell metabolism. Our faculty will help you discover how the history of evolution led to the present moment, how humans are an integral part of this framework, and what climate change might mean for the future of life on our planet. Biology graduates may also enjoy working in the scientific support services in the capacity of a forensic scientist for the police or industry, or in policy development and consultancy, which involves providing advice to governments and other bodies.
